INTERNET DATABASES

 

Remember that SUBJECT searches are generally preferable to WORD searches.  Look for the “subject search” method in each database!

 

INTERNET DATABASES:

 

The following products are available (without using passwords) at not only ALL 12 Internet stations in the library but at any computer on campus.  Just go to the library homepage (http://library.blackrivertech.edu), click on "databases," and select the product you want to use.  Only the databases with a * are available off-campus.  You will be prompted for a password if you are anywhere besides the main BRTC campus.

 

*DISCOVERING COLLECTION – Full-text information from BOOKS, 22 multi-volume titles published by Gale....

This book source has timeline events; audio and video files; plot summaries; essays; collegiate, biographical, and geographical dictionaries, and about 20,000 biography entries.  This database always requires a password, even in the library.

 

*EBSCOHost –Thousands of scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers covering virtually every discipline of academic study.... 

Most articles are full-text.  EBSCOHost indexes from 1984 to the present with daily updates.  Various indexes can be selected for particular subjects, such as nursing, health, business, etc., but Academic Search Elite is an index that college students should always select, since it covers many academic journals.  A subject search can be done by adding SU to the search (example: SU dolphins). 

 

*ENCYCLOPEDIA  BRITANNICA – Thoroughly redesigned for 2006, EB has constantly updated general information....and more, such as journal articles and a large collection of significant classics.  Thousands of complete books are in this source!  The World Data Analyst has current and past statistics on the countries of the world.  Current events are covered, too.

 

GROLIER ONLINE PASSPORT - Includes Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Americana, and The New Book of Knowledge (reference and current events for elementary school up)....

This source also has an English to Spanish as well as a Spanish to English dictionary, an easy-to-use world atlas, and access to world newspapers.  Current events are covered, too.

 

JSTOR – Archives of over 300 journals in many, many disciplines (all in full-text)....

The BRTC Library subscribes to the Arts and Sciences I and II Collections, as well as the Language and Literature Collection.  Arts & Sciences I Collection has journal titles in fifteen disciplines, including economics, history, political science, sociology, ecology, mathematics, statistics, and related fields.  Arts and Sciences II Collection adds depth to Collection I, plus offers core journals in several new disciplines, such as archaeology, classics, and African studies.  The Language and Literature Collection spans the literary cultures of many different countries and contains articles in several languages.  Also included is a range of core journals covering literary criticism.   JSTOR is continually adding reference linking, allowing users “to follow a link from a reference in an article directly to the cited article.”

 

*GRANGER’S WORLD OF POETRY ONLINE – Almost 200,000 of the “most respected and studied poems from around the world” in full-text, with biographies, commentaries, critical context, glossary, and more....

PROJECT MUSE (“Standard” collection)About 300 full-text high quality humanities, arts, and social sciences journals from 60 scholarly publishers....

Muse is the sole source of titles from many leading university presses and scholarly societies.  Every journal is heavily indexed and peer-reviewed. 

 

*PROQUEST - (Periodical Abstracts Research II edition) – More than 2,000 periodicals covering virtually every topic from current news to historical events....

For most titles coverage dates from 1990, but some backfiles go back as far as 1971.  Current coverage of articles from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal are also included.  All articles have abstracts, and over 60% are full-text.

 

*SIRS - Everything in SIRS is full-text from over 1,500 sources, including magazines, newspapers, and government documents....a great database to search for reaction papers for business classes and science classes, etc.  Use the “topic browse” button to easily find articles on particular areas.  Also, click on “Educators’ Resources” for many tips, such as Guide to Writing a Research Paper and Guide to Creating a Powerpoint Presentation, Map Skills, SIRS Citation Guidelines, etc.  This online product includes SIRS RESEARCHER, SIRS RENAISSANCE, SIRS GOVERNMENT REPORTER, plus WEBSELECT; all can be searched individually or together (the default).  The WebSelect feature provides supplementary links to reputable information on the Web.  SIRS RESEARCHER has current information on social issues, SIRS RENAISSANCE covers the arts and humanities, and SIRS GOVERNMENT REPORTER information is from federal departments, agencies, and commissions, such as historic documents, U. S. Supreme Court decisions, etc. 

 

 

 

 

*NEW FIRSTSEARCH (basic) - Unlimited searches on about a dozen databases: WorldCAT, OCLC Online Union List of Periodicals, ArticlesFirst, ContentsFirst, Electronic Collections Online, GPO Month Catalog, NetFirst, ERIC, MEDLINE, PapersFirst, Proceedings, and World Almanac.  No full-text – only abstracts.  (Note:  WorldCat is a good resource for locating books on particular subjects for interlibrary loan.)

 

NEW FIRSTSEARCH (complete) - Debit searches of 70+ databases (This is a pay-per-use service that requires librarian’s assistance, authorization number, and password.)

 

*Remote access is available for these databases.  Get user names and passwords from the library, or (if you are a current student) go to the “Contact Us” page to request passwords.
