BRTC LIBRARY NEWS
VOLUME 1, NUMBER 1, September 2007
From the desk of Anne Simpson, Library Director
This year your BRTC student ID is also your library card. In the past, you needed to have a separate barcode (supplied by the library) in order to check out books from the library. Thanks to the library's upgrade to SirsiDynix Horizon, the barcode on your ID card allows you to use it as your library card.
The week of September 29 through October 2 is Banned Book Week. Many people think that book banning is something that only happened in the past, but in 2005 more than 400 attempts to ban books were made. A banned book is one that has been censored by an authority such as a government, a library, or a school system. A book that has been banned is actually removed from a library or school system. The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees our right to free speech which includes the right to read and write books. At various times, some of the tamest books have been banned such as Grimm's Fairy Tales because it was too violent and even Little Red Riding Hood because Little Red Riding Hood gave her grandmother a bottle of wine.
Come to the library and see our display and a list of the books and authors who have been on the banned book list at one time or another.
To access the library’s homepage use the online catalog or databases, see the New Books List or the New York Times Best Seller List and more at

If you are having problems accessing the online catalog, contact or come by the library and we will be happy to explain how to use the catalog both in the library and from your computer at home.
